Naturally, the company chose to demonstrate the special-edition sedan’s extra power by drifting the car around a piece of open tarmac at the Munich Olympic Stadium.
Translating to “30 years of the M5,” the limited series features a retuned 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 592 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It is the most powerful street-legal model ever crafted by BMW’s M division, reaching 62 mph from a standstill in just 3.9 seconds.
The video also shows the original hand-built E28 M5, which helped raise the bar for sedan performance in 1984 with 282 ponies and 250 lb-ft of torque, though the particular example on the drift track was not put through the same abuse as the new M5.
BMW is producing just 300 of the limited-edition ’30 Jahre’ sedans. Each will likely command a significant premium over the standard M5, but the company has not yet confirmed pricing details.
