Hyundai’s Nurburgring test center completes 4,000th lap

October 8, 2014
Hyundai is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Nurburgring test facility, where factory drivers have already tallied more than 4,000 laps.

The company’s “Accelerated Durability Test” uses the famed track, also known as the “Green Hell,” to simulate a vehicle’s normal lifespan cycle during just four to six weeks of hot laps, averaging nearly 20 laps per day.

A team of six professional test drivers also assess handling characteristics in both wet and dry conditions on the 12.8-mile track, helping engineers fine-tune suspension components early in the development process.

In total, the intensive testing undertaken in the last year is equivalent to more than 1.4 million km (~870,000 miles) of normal road use,” the company said in a statement.

The company established the 39,000-square-foot facility directly on the circuit property, requiring 15 months of construction and an investment of approximately $8.3 million USD.

Several other major automakers, including BMW and Jaguar, also have dedicated test facilities at the Nurburgring complex.
