GM recalls Chevy Caprice to fix non-compliant shift lever

October 8, 2014
General Motors has announced another recall for its Chevrolet Caprice, citing a compliance problem with the shift lever.

The transmission selector level contains two pins that can become displaced, allowing the driver to shift out of ‘Park’ without first depressing the brake pedal. The defect also allows the ignition key to be removed without the transmission in ‘Park.’

Both issues make the cars non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards regarding the transmission and rollaway prevention. It is unclear if the defect has been blamed for any accidents or injuries.

The issue is said to be limited to Police Patrol Vehicles rom the 2011 through 2013 model years, including approximately 7,598 units throughout the US market.

GM has not yet announced a time-frame for replacing the pins in the shift lever.
