Detroit Electric teases UK-built SP:01 electric roadster [Video]

Detroit Electric has released a new teaser video showing its all-electric SP:01 sports car.

The segment provides a hint at the final exterior design, though the design remains mostly unchanged from images released earlier in the development cycle. The headlights appear to be slightly tweaked, with a white LED strip that now runs along the entire bottom edge.

The company has also launched a new brand identity, marking the latest strategic shift as the startup attempts to bring its roadster to market. The change follows an earlier decision to move manufacturing plans from Michigan to the UK.

The new corporate identity has modernised the brand’s image to ensure it is fit for today’s rapidly evolving market, while preserving some of the magic and heritage of the original Detroit Electric brand,” said CEO Albert Lam.

Lam is better known for his time at the helm of Lotus Engineering Group. He decided to use the Lotus Elise platform to build an all-electric roadster, reviving the Detroit Electric marque after nearly 75 years.

The SP:01 is naturally similar to the Elise-based Tesla Roadster, both sharing a 3.7-second 0-60 mph time. The UK-built model has a smaller battery that likely trades range for a lower curb weight, though the company has not yet released final specs.

Initial reports suggested the SP:01 will fetch $135,000 whenever it arrives on the market.
