Michigan Gov. declines to veto controversial anti-Tesla bill [Video]

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has signed into law a controversial bill that will explicitly prohibit Tesla Motors from selling vehicles directly to consumers in the state.
The legislation, which primarily focuses on allowing dealers to add extra fees to vehicle purchases, was widely supported in both houses. It received only one ‘nay’ vote in the state House of Representatives, and unanimous support in the state Senate.

Tesla accuses Senator Joe Hune of slipping new language into the bill at the last minute, “using a procedure that prevented legislators and the public at large from knowing what was happening or allowing debate,” that prohibits all automakers — not just franchisors — from selling directly to consumers.

“This bill does not, as some have claimed, prevent auto manufacturers from selling automobiles directly to consumers at retail in Michigan – because this is already prohibited under Michigan law,” countered Snyder in a letter to legislators that accompanies the signed bill.

Despite opting out of his veto power for HB 5606, Snyder claims to be open to the discussion that surrounds such legislation.

“We should always be willing to re-examine our business and regulatory practices with an eye toward improving the customer experience for our citizens and doing things in a more efficient and less costly fashion,” he said.
