The concept was penned under the guidance of Marc Lichte, who’s been leading Audi’s design team since February. The teaser video reveals precious few concrete details but it hints the A9 retains Audi’s signature single-frame grille while incorporating a brand new design language throughout.
Lichte explains the concept draws inspiration from key models in Audi history including the 90 quattro IMSA GTO, the original TT and the first-generation A8 that was launched in 1994.
The new flagship concept will be just one of three world debuts for Audi at the LA show. In addition to those premieres, five other Audi models will be making their North American debut in Southern California later this month.
What’s Next?
While the new look is expected to inspire nearly all future Audis, the LA-bound show car will specifically influence a new range-topping sedan that will eventually sit atop the current A8. Expected to land in 2017 at the earliest, the A9 will be offered with a long list of engine options including a twin-turbocharged V8 tuned to send over 600 horsepower to all four wheels.
