Volvo XC40 inching toward production

November 12, 2014
Volvo is moving forward with plans for a compact XC40 crossover, but it will likely be a few years before we see the utility vehicle in dealer showrooms.
“A small SUV is very high on our wish list,” Volvo president and CEO Hakan Samuelsson told Autocar. “There is a clear trend towards downsizing and we will provide customers with an SUV that is small in stature but remains premium in nature.”

Despite its high priority, Volvo won’t introduce the XC40 until it rolls out its upcoming Compact Modular Architecture platform. The Swedish automaker deemed its latest Scalable Platform Architecture, which underpins the 2015 XC90, too big to underpin the compact XC40.

No timeframe has been given for when the CMA architecture might be ready for production, but the XC40 isn’t expected to make production until at least 2018. When it does arrive, the XC40 will use Volvo’s range of Drive-E four-cylinder engines.

The Volvo XC40 will rival vehicles like the Audi Q5, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and the BMW X4.
