LA LIVE: Volkswagen Golf R Variant

November 21, 2014
Volkswagen has revealed the 2016 Golf R Variant (Wagon) at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
Based on the Golf Variant that is currently only sold in Europe, the Golf R Variant is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine that makes 296 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles and the latest evolution of Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The turbo four sends the Golf R Variant from zero to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph. A suspension setup that has been lowered by 0.8 inches and upgraded brakes on all four corners keep the extra power in check.

The Golf R’s body kit is carried over to the Variant essentially unchanged. The wagon boasts a muscular look thanks to an aggressive front bumper, sharp LED lights on both ends, side skirts, a discreet trunk-mounted spoiler and quad exhaust pipes integrated into an air diffuser. 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped by low-profile tires wrap up the look, while 19-inch wheels are available at an extra cost.

The wagon features a race-inspired cockpit with sport seats upholstered in a combination of cloth and Alcantara, aluminum pedals and a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel. Buyers after a more premium ambiance can order the Nappa Carbon leather package that adds dark Carbon Nappa leather upholstery on the outer seat surfaces, the inner side support panels and the head rests.

Volkswagen’s fastest wagon offers 21.4 cubic feet of trunk space when carrying five passengers, making it considerably roomier than the Golf R hatchback that it shares the bulk of its mechanical components with. Folding the rear seats down clears up a generous 57.2 cubic feet.

The Volkswagen Golf R Variant is scheduled to go on sale next year as a 2016 model. Rumors indicate that it will be joined by a more family-focused model that will replace the Jetta Sportswagen.
