Renault-Nissan sells 200,000th EV, dominating zero-emissions market

November 27, 2014
The Renault-Nissan alliance has announced that its global sales of electric vehicles have cumulatively surpassed 200,000 units.
The duo claim to dominate the zero-emissions car market, holding a 58-percent share.

Most of the credit goes to Nissan’s Leaf, which accounts for 148,700 units since its introduction in December 2010. Renault’s Kangoo ZE van contributed the remaining 51,500 sales, though it arrived on the market a year after the leaf.

The other four electric vehicles in Renault-Nissan’s allied lineup account for far fewer sales. Nissan also sells the e-NV200 commercial van, while Renault offers the Twizy urban two-seater, the ZOE subcompact and the Fluence ZE sedan.

“Renault and Nissan’s electric vehicles are the zero-emission volume leaders – and, most important, they enjoy high satisfaction rates from customers around the world,” said Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn. “Based on positive owner feedback and the increasing demand for cars that run on renewable energy, it’s no surprise that EV sales are accelerating – particularly in regions where charging infrastructure is well developed.”

The 200,000 EVs have collectively driven approximately four billion miles, representing a claimed savings of 53 million gallons of fuel and nearly 500,000 tons of carbon-dioxide emissions.
