Toyota recalls new Sienna to fix overhead assist grips

November 27, 2014
Toyota has announced a recall campaign that involves approximately 30,000 Sienna minivans from the 2015 model year.
The affected vehicles are outfitted with second-row overhead assist grips that are prone to detach from their mount under the roof rails. The behavior is associated with side-curtain airbag deployment in a crash.

“If an assist grip completely detaches, it may contact an occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” Toyota said in a statement.

The company claims to be unaware of any accidents or injuries caused by grip detachment.

Dealers have been instructed to modify the headliner under the second-row assist grips to resolve the issue. A time-frame for beginning repairs has not yet been announced.
