Lamborghini Urus to be built outside Italy?

November 29, 2014
Lamborghini is already talking production plans for its Urus SUV as it awaits a final greenlight from parent Volkswagen Group.
CEO Stephan Winkelmann suggests there may not be enough production capacity at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese factory, potentially forcing the company to build the SUV outside of Italy. If so, it would be the first Lamborghini to be built outside the marque’s home country.

“We are working on an SUV and this is one of the things which is paramount for the future of the brand and the company as well,” Winkelmann told Car Advice in a recent interview. “It means doubling our sales and is a huge investment.”

The executive notes that he may be forced to choose between keeping Lamborghini production in Italy or adding the third model to be produced elsewhere, but he will “opt for the third model.”

Further details remain unclear, though the project is said to be on track to begin production in 2017 once it gets a nod from VW Group. The parent company’s Slovokia plant is one potential venue, where the Urus could be built alongside the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.
