NHTSA: A million GM vehicles still need ignition-switch replacement

December 3, 2014
General Motors has finally secured enough ignition switches to repair all of its recalled vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests nearly a million vehicles have yet to be brought in to service centers for a replacement switch, leaving them vulnerable to airbag non-deployment in the event of a crash.

Affected vehicles include the 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevy HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky.

“At NHTSA’s direction, GM ramped up its production of replacement ignition switches in order to complete production of replacement parts ahead of its original goal of early November,” the NHTSA said in a statement.

The agency also pushed GM to implement other programs to improve the response rate, including targeted outreach for non-English speakers, maintaining current information on its website, phone calls, social media and providing financial incentives, among other ideas.

“Moving forward, NHTSA will continue to push the automaker to keep up the momentum and get the remaining vehicles fixed promptly,” the NHTSA added.
