VW reveals Golf R Touch cockpit concept

January 6, 2015
Volkswagen has revealed a new concept vehicle, the Golf R Touch, that showcases the company’s vision for a next-generation connected cockpit.
Dual cameras continuously monitor the interior, with a particular focus on the driver’s hands. Combining the 3D camera feed and input from proximity sensors, the system enables drivers to control many functions via gestures rather than physical interaction with switches, knobs or buttons.

Some implementations of gesture control in consumer electronics have failed to gain traction, sometimes criticized for being less than intuitive or failing to accurately interpret hand motions, however VW claims to have found an approach that makes sense in a vehicle.

“The development team for the Golf R Touch pursued the goal of producing an interior and infotainment concept that would fulfill seemingly contradictory requirements,” the company said in a statement. “Despite the continually growing complexity and number of functions, this concept was intended to reduce driver distractions while attaining maximum personalization and intuitive operation in the car.”

Complementing the gesture controls, occupants can also interact with a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen and an eight-inch “control center” panel that provides touch controls for climate and media playback. Multi-touch strip provide an additional layer of input, while a third 12.3-inch instrument display can be rapidly switched between different modes.

VW has not yet confirmed production plans for the Golf R Touch cockpit, though the idea is presented as a viable concept for real-world vehicles. In the meantime, the company is pushing forward with plans to bring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to vehicles before the end of the year.
