Mazda confirms 155 hp for new MX-5 Miata

January 31, 2015
Mazda has finally confirmed output specs for its new MX-5 Miata.
The 2.0-liter SkyActiv engine — found under the hood of the US model — produces 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Some other markets will receive a 1.5-liter powerplant with 129 ponies and 111 lb-ft of torque.

At first glance the figures appear to show a downgrade from the 2015 model, rated at 167 hp. The redesigned Miata is expected to be more than 220 pounds lighter than its predecessor, however, resulting in a better power-to-weight ratio.

The change reflects Mazda’s aim to go back to the roots for the fourth-generation MX-5, reversing the trend toward larger and heavier. Dimensions are closer to the first-generation Miata, while the ride height has dropped.

The US variant will arrive in showrooms later this year.
