Sources told Reuters that production of the battery-electric will begin in late 2016, and assembly will take place at an existing, underutilized small-car facility in Orion Township, Michigan. Those same sources indicated that production volume has been targeted at 25,000-30,000 units a year.
The purported Tesla challenger arrives will have a range of at least 200 miles and GM has promised a MSRP of $30,000. The concept is designed for minimum footprint and maximum practicality. The airy, weight-conscious interior maximizes available interior volume, taking advantage of the EV drivetrain to maximize usable space. Outside, the Bolt EV’s compact footprint and small overhangs make it ideal for tight maneuvering.
“The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers.”
