Audi technical director Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg already confirmed that the company plans to release an SQ7 in 2016, however an unnamed insider has now told Top Gear that an RS variant is under development.
Revamped for the 2016 model year, the new Q7 is built upon Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform. The new architecture slashes the model’s curb weight by approximately 716 pounds — a better starting point for a high-performance RS edition.
Additional details are unclear, but Audi is said to be considering either a diesel or a gasoline engine. The latter is considered more likely, potentially borrowing the RS6′s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine with 553 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.
The RS Q7 is also expected to be outfitted with retuned suspension, upgraded steering and other enhancements. The package is described as “the perfect solution for that sportive SUV.”
The comments suggest the company may not have finalized many details, making a launch unlikely in the next two years.
