Mazda is Goodwood Festival of Speed’s featured marque

February 23, 2015

Mazda will be the Honoured Manufacturer headlining the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the massive motorsports gathering held in the UK each year.

As the featured marque, Mazda will have the honor of having their greatest race cars displayed atop an art installment that serves as the event’s centerpiece. Classic and modern Mazda vehicles will also be prominently displayed on the Goodwood lawn.

Taking center stage will be the 1991 Mazda 787B, the only rotary-engined car ever to win Le Mans. Additionally, several Mazda competition cars, possibly including one of the RX-7 sports cars that helped the company achieve over 100 victories in IMSA racing, will be featured as well.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed began in 1993 on an estate belonging to the Earl of March and Kinrara. Within a few years, automakers from Audi to Ferrari were establishing an official presence, often taking the opportunity to unveil performance models to the world. The main event of the festival is a hillclimb up the estate’s 1.6-mile driveway, but rally stages, a supercar run, and a concours d’elegance type car show are also part of the festivities.

The theme of this year’s Festival is “Flat-out and fearless: racing on the edge.” The event will be held June 25-28.
