Land Rover has issued a recall for nearly 62,000 newer Range Rover SUVs to resolve an airbag glitch.
The company has acknowledged a problem with the occupant classification system that determines if an adult or a child is sitting in the front passenger seat. A lightweight adult passenger could be misclassified in certain scenarios, disabling the airbag and increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
The company has acknowledged a problem with the occupant classification system that determines if an adult or a child is sitting in the front passenger seat. A lightweight adult passenger could be misclassified in certain scenarios, disabling the airbag and increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
The issue was first spotted by customers who noticed that the ‘Passenger Airbag Off’ lamp was illuminated when an adult occupant had been occupying the passenger seat and the vehicle was driven on very smooth roads. Further investigation determined that a software deficiency caused the adult to be misinterpreted as a cinched child seat.
Engineers have revised the software to properly interpret occupant classifications in such scenarios.
Land Rover claims to be unaware of any injuries associated with the condition, which affects the 2013-2015 Range Rover and 2014-2015 Range Rover Sport.
