The Tesla Model S was considered the “best overall” for the second consecutive year, with a test score of 99/100 and an average reliability rating. The magazine credited the sedan’s “innovation, magnificence and sheer technological arrogance” as contributing factors.
Subaru had the most winning models on the list, with three entries leading their respective segments. The Impreza was considered the best compact car, while the Legacy led the midsize sedans and the Forester topped the small SUVs.
The Buick Regal made a surprise appearance on the list, winning the sports-sedan category against German rivals.
“Surprisingly agile, the Regal defies Buick’s brand stereotype,” CR notes. “Close your eyes, and you’ll think you’re driving an Audi–a very good Audi at that. You can even get a Regal with a stick shift to bolster your sport sedan credentials. It may not be as luxurious as the German giants, but a well-equipped Regal delivers a lot for the money.”
General Motors also beat rivals in the large-car segment, winning with the Chevrolet Impala.
“For decades, the Impala nameplate was synonymous with the image of a bad rental car,” the magazine observes. “Make no mistake, this Impala humbles the Toyota Avalon and even the Lexus ES 350.”
The list did not include any pickup trucks, as the 2015 Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Colorado are too new for reliability ratings and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 are “not reliable enough.”
