Geneva LIVE: Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II

March 5, 2015
The Mitsubishi XR-PHEV II concept has made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
Unsurprisingly, the XR-PHEV II is an update of the XR-PHEV concept that was first shown at the 2013 edition of the Tokyo Motor Show. Over the past two years, the concept has gained a modestly redesigned front end with a twin-slat radiator grille and a new lower bumper, metal A-pillars and a redrawn rear fascia that incorporates an air diffuser and additional strips of chrome trim.

The modifications are more extensive on the inside, where the XR-PHEV II is fitted with a less futuristic cockpit, a three-spoke steering wheel and a color touch screen that pops out from the top of the dashboard. The bulk of the switchgear on the center console has been replaced by a touch-sensitive surface and a controller knob.

Although concrete technical details are vague at best, Mitsubishi hints that the off-roader is powered by a brand-new plug-in hybrid drivetrain made up of an internal combustion engine and a 163-horsepower electric motor. The XR-PHEV emits less than 40 grams of CO2 per kilometer in a mixed cycle.

Mitsubishi promises the XR-PHEV II concept will spawn a production model in the near future, but a more precise timeframe was not given.
