Porsche will introduce a Spyder variant of its popular Boxster roadster by the end of the year. The announcement was made in the Volkswagen Group’s 2014 financial report.
“This year, the Volkswagen Group brands will be launching 50 new models, successors and upgrades,” said Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the VW Group. “These include key models such as the new Touran, the Audi Q7 and Audi A4, the Porsche 911 and Porsche Boxster Spyder, the SKODA Superb and the SEAT Ibiza, as well as the new Caddy and the new T6 from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.”

Winterkorn didn’t give any more details, but the Boxster Spyder should be similar to the vehicle of the same name that was launched at the 2009 Los Angeles auto show. That vehicle focused on weight savings by ditching things like a folding convertible roof and even conventional door handles. The last-generation Boxster Spyder was also lower and more power than its Boxster S counterpart.
The upcoming Boxster Spyder will be positioned alongside the recently unveiled Cayman GT4 as the most hardcore models in the Porsche lineup without a 911 badge. Given its historical ties with the LA show, look for Porsche to unveil the new Boxster Spyder later this year in Southern California.
