Tesla CEO: Driving will eventually become illegal

March 18, 2015
Fully autonomous vehicles have yet to arrive in showrooms, but Tesla CEO is so confident in the technology that he predicts it will one day be illegal for a human to drive an automobile.
“In the distant future, I think people may outlaw driving cars because it’s too dangerous,” Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said at a conference held by graphics chipmaker Nvidia Corp, according to Automotive News. “You can’t have a person driving a two-ton death machine.”

Tesla recently launched a new “autopilot” self-driving mode for its Model S sedan, with more autonomous tech expected on the way. In fact, Musk says Tesla will have autonomous driving completely sorted within just a few years.

“I almost view it as a solved problem,” Musk said. “We know exactly what to do, and we’ll solve it in a few years.”

Automakers like Audi, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz are also racing toward a driverless future. Technology giant Google is also working on its own self-driving tech, and Apple could soon join the fray.

Nvidia currently makes chips for the Model S’ instruments and center screen, but that partnership could expand to autonomous tech. At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year Nvidia unveiled a new automotive computer designed for autonomous vehicles.
