The Mazda2 hatchback has received a significant jump in EPA efficiency ratings for the 2016 model year.

The 2014 Mazda2 wasn’t the worst performer in the segment, but its highway ratings were up to 9 mpg lower than the redesigned version. The five-speed manual was rated at 29/35 mpg, and the aging four-speed automatic was even lower with a 28/34 mpg score.
The 2016 model is now ahead of the 2015 Chevrolet Sonic (29/40 mpg), 2015 Chevrolet Spark (31/39 mpg), 2016 Honda Fit (33/41 mpg), 2015 Hyundai Accent (27/38 mpg), 2015 Ford Fiesta (31/43 mpg) and the 2015 Kia Rio Eco (28/37 mpg).
Similar fuel-sipping performance is also achieved by the Mazda2′s stablemate, the Scion iA, which is expected to arrive in showrooms this fall.
