The latest campaign is being as a regional program, focusing on vehicles that were sold or ever registered in states with high humidity.
“Based on new field information and in consultation with NHTSA, Nissan Group is taking further action to expand the previously announced Takata Inflator Regional Recall to include additional Model Year 2004-2006 Nissan Sentra vehicles in the affected areas of the U.S. and its territories,” the company said in a statement.
The announcement reportedly follows an injury blamed on a defective airbag inflator installed in a 2006 Sentra, according to Bloomberg. An occupant was allegedly injured by shrapnel from an exploding inflator.
“Before that accident we didn’t have enough data to recall,” Nissan spokesman Steve Yaeger said. “We’re moving as quickly as we can to expand the recalls.”
Several automakers have joined forces to further investigate the scope of the defect, which has already led to recalls for more than 16 million vehicles. Additional revisions are expected to be announced as the companies and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration move forward with their respective inquiries.
