The ‘workhorse’ powerplant is available in three different displacements, powering 14 different models from the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands. The 3.6-liter variant is the most common, used in vehicles ranging from the Chrysler 200 to the Ram 1500. The smaller 3.2-liter edition can be found in the Jeep Cherokee, while the 3.0-liter package is designed for China-market Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees.
Nearly half of the company’s US-produced vehicles sold in 2015 were equipped with Pentastar mills, which are built at one of two facilities in Michigan or a plant in Mexico.
“This engine delivers world-class performance in multiple displacements and vehicle applications around the globe,” said FCA North America powertrain head Bob Lee.
Reports circulating late last year suggest FCA is preparing to add several new variations to the Pentastar family, including a twin-turbocharged V6 that will be aimed squarely at Ford’s EcoBoost engines and GM’s turbocharged LFX powerplants. A turbocharged 3.6-liter mill is expected to be introduced late this year, under the Jeep Grand Cherokee‘s hood, while the revised 3.2-liter variant is said to be headed to the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country.
