Inadvertent braking sparks Jeep Grand Cherokee investigation

June 6, 2015

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is under investigation for potential problems with its automatic braking system.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received at least nine complaints of inappropriate and unexpected intervention of the automatic braking system.

“All nine reports alleged unexpected braking incidents preceded by collision imminent brake warnings and resulting in sudden reduction in vehicle speed in traffic,” the investigation documents note.

Several of the complaints claim the autonomous braking system engaged with no objects in the road, resulting in full brake force and ABS activation.

“Collision avoidance system engages for no safety reason whatsoever. I can be the only vehicle on the road and this will occur,” one complaint says. “Has been happening intermittently each and every day the vehicle is driven.”

The NHTSA is now taking a closer look at the issue to determine if a deeper investigation or recall are warranted.
