BMW will reportedly take on Tesla’s upcoming Model X with an all-electric utility vehicle of its own.
Although Tesla’s Model X crossover is still months away from retail sales, the all-electric utility vehicle is enjoying a lot of positive buzz. Looking to tap into that fervor, German business magazine Wirthschaftswoche claims that BMW’s board is now weighing an electric SUV of its own.

If given the green light the Model X rival would be built at BMW’s SUV plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Spartanburg plant currently builds BMW’s X3, X4, X5 and X6 utility vehicles.
The electric SUV could join BMW’s i-line of electric vehicles. BMW currently sells the compact i3 — which can be had as a pure electric or as a range-extending hybrid — and the i8 hybrid sports car.
If the iSUV is approved, it’s not expected to make production until 2018 at the earliest.
