Volkswagen offers the California in a variety of configurations in order to cater to both buyers who plan on using it occasionally and buyers who plan on living in it as they drive around the globe. The van can be fitted with a fold-out table, front seats that swivel, a stainless steel sink, a fridge, a compact two-burner stove and numerous cabinets.
The California comes with a pair of chairs integrated into the hatch and a small picnic table cleverly hidden in the sliding door. All models feature a pop-up top (a feature inherited from the Westfalia vans sold from the 1960s to the 1980s) and a large sun shade.
Currently, the California can only be ordered with a 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder turbodiesel engine available with either 83, 100, 147 or 201 horsepower. Volkswagen promises that a 2.0-liter gasoline-burning four-banger will be added to the lineup before the end of the year.
Front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox come standard. Buyers can order the California with an automatic dual-clutch transmission, Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system or both.
The California is on sale now in its home country of Germany, where it carries a base price of €41,429 (roughly $46,000).
