Confirming persistent rumors, Ford has announced that the Focus RS will deliver 345 horsepower.
The high-performance hatchback is powered by the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine found under the Mustang‘s hood. It has been outfitted with a new twin-scroll turbocharger, however, with a larger compressor and connected to a much bigger intercooler to maximize charge density. Combined with a less restrictive intake system, the powerplant easily exceeds the Mustang’s 310-horsepower rating.
The engine revisions also bring a slight increase in torque, resulting in 324 lb-ft of twist from 2,000 through 4,500 rpm — delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and a new dynamic torque-vectoring system. An overboost feature bumps torque output up to 347 lb-ft for up to 15 seconds.
Ford previously suggested the RS can reach 60 mph in approximately 4.5 seconds, though the number could be revised now that final power figures have been published.
“This very special 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit will inspire drivers as they feel the surge of the turbo, and reward them as they take it to the red line – all delivered with a visceral sound guaranteed to put a smile on your face,” said Ford Performance global director Dave Pericak. “The stunning pace and innovative technology of the all-new Focus RS place it head-to-head with performance models from luxury and exotic marques, and it’s ready for the challenge.”
The Focus RS will be one of a dozen new Ford Performance models to arrive globally through the end of the decade.
