GM recalls Hummer H3 over fire risk; Chevy Spark to fix OnStar glitch

July 8, 2015
General Motors has issued two recall campaigns totaling nearly 250,000 vehicles, including the Hummer H3 and the Chevrolet Spark.
Hummers account for most of the total, with 196,000 units including the 2006-2010 H3 and 2009-2010 H3T. All share the same defective HVAC wiring connector, which is prone to overheat when run at high speed for long periods of time.

The company has acknowledged at least three allegedly minor burns due to vehicle fires, however no crashes or deaths have been blamed on the faulty parts.

The second recall includes approximately 50,000 Chevrolet Sparks from the 2014 and 2015 model years, along with the 2015 Chevrolet Sonic.

In cars equipped with OnStar and the base radio, the system can freeze when giving OnStar turn-by-turn directions. The glitch also interrupts all radio and infotainment functions, including warning chimes related to vehicle diagnostics. The behavior consequently runs afoul of federal safety guidelines.

The H3s will receive a new wiring module, while the Sparks and Sonics will be flashed with new infotainment software.
