Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has kicked off production for its 2016 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty pickup lineup.
The first example to roll off the assembly line is, naturally, a Mega Cab Laramie Longhorn edition outfitted with Cummins’ 6.7-liter diesel engine, which boasts a massive 900 lb-ft torque rating and 385 horsepower.
Paired with a heavy-duty Aisin transmission, the oil burner allows the regular-cab 2WD edition to tow up to 31,210 pounds. Alternatively, buyers can stack up to 7,390 pounds of cargo in the bed.
The company has squeezed more torque out of the 6.7-liter engine on several occasions, starting with a jump from 850 lb-ft to 865 lb-ft for the 2015 model year. The current rating is claimed to represent the most torque ever offered in a mass-production vehicle.
On the lighter end of the truck spectrum, FCA last month began volume production of the redesigned 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel. The off-road package features a more aggressive and sportier appearance with blacked-out bumpers and a new grille, while ground clearance has been increased to more than 10 inches.
The Ram 1500 Rebel should already be available in showrooms, alongside the new luxurious Laramie Limited package. The stump-pulling 3500 HD will likely arrive in the coming weeks.
