Amazon paid $250M for former Top Gear cast

July 31, 2015
Fans of the show Top Gear were happy the learn that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will soon be back on the airwaves with a new car show, but that trio is probably the happiest of them all.

That’s because, according to UK’s The Daily Mirror, Amazon shelled out £160 million, or $250 million, to land the former Top Gear stars for an upcoming series. In return for that quarter-of-a-billion dollar investment, Amazon’s Prime video service will receive three, 12-episode seasons of the new show.

Although it should be fairly evident, that investment is massive for an online streaming service. In comparison, Amazon Video rival Netflix spent about $100 million on the the first two seasons of the wildly popular House of Cards.

The new show, which will include Andy Wilman, the former producer of Top Gear, is set to hit TVs sometime next year. In order to access the new show, car lovers will need an Amazon Prime account, which runs $99 per year.
