The Korean automakers are preparing to launch four hybrids, including two plug-in models and a pure electric car, unnamed sources have told Automotive News. The first dedicated hybrids are expected to arrive next year for the 2017 model year.
Recent spy shots showed one of the potential new offerings, a hybrid crossover (pictured) being tested by Kia. Other spy shots revealed an apparent Prius-fighting hybrid hatchback under development by Hyundai. The duo may be planning separate bodystyles to avoid cross-brand sales cannibalization.
The automakers’ dedicated hybrids are said to be share the same basic platform as the next-generation Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte. The drivetrain is rumored to pair a 1.6-liter direct-injection gasoline engine and a single electric motor, though power figures and other specs have not yet surfaced.
The hybrids will allegedly be followed by Hyundai’s first all-electric vehicle, likely arriving for the 2017 model year. Rollout is expected to be limited to states with EV mandates, such as California.
All four of the new models are said to be on track to arrive on the market by the 2018 model year.
