The highly-anticipated performance compact had been rumored to be make its debut this week at Monterey Car Week or next month in Frankfurt, however unnamed sources have told BMWBlog that the public will have to wait until October or later.
Whenever it does arrive, the M2 is rumored to deliver up to 374 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six. Other sources point to a slightly lower output at 365 ponies and 343 lb-ft of twist, but with 25 lb-ft of overboost torque during hard acceleration.
The company is expected to offer a choice between a six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic gearbox or a dual-clutch unit. The quickest configuration will likely reach 60 mph from a standstill in just over four seconds.
Spy shots showing a camouflaged pre-production prototype surfaced nearly a year ago, hinting at an aggressive body kit inspired by the track-only M235i Racing coupe. Plenty of carbon fiber is expected, with an interior closely resembling the current M3/M4.
The latest report suggests the M2 should arrive on the market early next year with just four color choices: Long Beach Blue, Alpine White, Mineral Grey and Black Sapphire.
