Based on the C4 Cactus and inspired by the Méhari off-roader that retired in the late 1980s, the Cactus M eschews a hardtop in favor of an open-air experience. A rear arch allows passengers to take wakeboards and surfboards without the need for a roof rack.
The exterior design borrows a few styling cues from the Aircross concept that debuted earlier this year in Shanghai. Large wheels and an elevated ride height give the crossover a rugged appearance, and just two plastic doors enclose the open-concept interior. Rear-seat passengers must use integrated footholds to climb into the car.
A focus on sport and leisure activities is evident in the choice of interior materials, starting with waterproof neoprene ‘couchette’ seats in vivid color schemes. Drainage outlets in the footwells allow the cabin to be hosed down as needed, while the inflatable roof can be made into a tent.
Citroën promises the Cactus M will be able to handle rugged terrain, however it is unclear if all-wheel drive will be listed among the potential features. The PureTech 110 three-cylinder turbocharged engine appears to be the only choice, sending 110 horsepower to the tall and narrow tires.
Additional details will likely be announced during the Cactus M media event. The company has not signaled any intention to put the unique crossover into production.
