Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a recall for the Jeep Renegade to patch a security vulnerability.
The same issue was addressed in an earlier recall affecting 1.4 million cars, trucks and SUVs, ranging from the Jeep Cherokee to the Dodge Viper.
Security researchers earlier this year demonstrated a hack that allowed vehicle systems to be remotely hijacked via FCA’s Uconnect infotainment hardware. The team was able to take over control of the HVAC and radio function, along with the brakes and steering under certain conditions.
“Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall documents note.
The Renegade was mistakenly excluded from the initial recall, resulting in the separate campaign over the same issue. Owners will be sent a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability.
“With a large number of other vehicles with this condition being in the field for up to three years, to FCA US’ knowledge there has not been a single real world incident of an unlawful or unauthorized remote hack into any FCA US vehicle,” the company claims in its recall chronology report.
