Mitsubishi has outlined a new business plan that aims to boost the company’s sales by 30 percent by the 2016 fiscal year.
Although Mitsubishi is keeping exact details of the plan, called “New Stage 2016″, quiet for now, the Japanese automaker says that pickup trucks, SUVs and crossover models will be the foundation of its aggressive growth strategy. Mitsubishi is also planning to lean heavily on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles for sales, with the green technologies expected to account for about 20 percent of the company’s product mix by 2016.
According to Mitsubishi, New Stage 2016 will boost the company’s retail sales to 1,430,000 units, or 30 percent higher than the company’s project 2013 retail sales. Trucks, SUVs and crossovers are expected to account for 63 percent of Mitsubishi’s retails sales by 2016, up from 57 percent today.
Mitsubishi is planning to launch “new models” in the United States to help fuel its growth, including an updated version of its Outlander Sport compact crossover. Previous reports have suggested that Mitsubishi is also planning re-introducing its Montero nameplate to the U.S. market by 2016.
Improved quality will also be a major pillar of Mitsubishi’s strategy going forward, including the reduction of defective components by half.
During the first 10 months of the year Mitsubishi’s U.S. sales have decreased by 1 percent to 49,733 units.
