Mazda has filed a safety defect report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, warning of potential problems with the 2013-2016 CX-5.
The company suggests the fuel filler pipe is prone to rupture during a rear collision, allowing fuel to leak. The issue is presumably associated with a higher risk of fire in an accident.
“There are no reports of accidents or injuries occurring in the subject vehicles as a result of this condition,” a statement reads.
The recall appears to echo safety concerns that led to a recall for millions of older Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee vehicles. Safety advocates claim the rear-mounted tanks are prone to rupture in rear-end collisions, either from tank puncture or separation of the filler tube. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles disputed the allegations but nonetheless agreed to recall the suspect vehicles.
Mazda’s recall campaign does not appear to have been prompted by an NHTSA investigation.
