VW recalls 680K vehicles with Takata airbags

February 10, 2016

Volkswagen has added approximately 680,000 US-market vehicles to its Takata recall campaigns.

The latest round is associated with several non-desiccated airbag inflators, known as the SDI and PSDI-5, used for the driver-side airbags in five VW models and vehicles from other manufacturers.

The suspect inflators were used in the 2006-2010 and 2012-2014 Passat, 2012-2014 Eos, 2010-2014 Golf, 2010-2014 Jetta SportWagen, and 2009-2014 CC.

“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,” Takata has warned.

VW claims to be unaware of any ruptured SDI or PSDI-5 inflators in any VW Group vehicle globally, though a few of the inflators have failed in Takata’s laboratory testing program.
