Some Tesla Model S owners will soon be able to take advantage of wireless charging technology.
Tesla has not yet offered a vehicle with inductive charging from the factory, however Evatran has developed several aftermarket retrofit systems for the Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ELR, Nissan Leaf. The Model S will soon be added to the list, as noted by Charged.
The Plugless hardware will charge at 7.2kW, providing enough energy to add approximately 20 miles of range per hour. Empty-to-full charging takes around eight hours for the 60kWh sedan, 10 hours for the 70kWh battery or 12 hours for the 85kWh variant.
Notably, the company is currently only offering the retrofit system for rear-wheel-drive variants. Similar packages will eventually be available for Tesla’s AWD dual-motor sedans, but not until later in the year.
A parking pad is installed on the garage floor or outdoors in a driveway, while a control panel helps the driver align the vehicle in the correct spot to begin charging the battery. The vehicle adapter does not interfere with the ability to use a traditional charging cord.
Pricing has not been announced for the Model S, though buyers can place a $244 deposit for delivery in April. The Plugless system for the Nissan Leaf costs $1,540, or as a $49/month lease.
