Volkswagen’s latest four-door Golf family has earned five-star overall safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
The lineup includes the 2016 Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R and Golf SportWagen. The models join the Passat, Jetta, Beetle coupe and two-door Golf variants, all of which have already received five-star NCAP ratings.
Each of the four-door models received a five-star rating for side impact crashes, while frontal crash and rollover scenarios both resulted in four-star ratings.
The 2016 Golf and GTI have also received Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS test program includes a more challenging small-overlap scenario that is not found in the government trials.
Volkswagen was one of the top winners in the first round of IIHS crash tests for 2016-model-year vehicles. Placing third on the list, Volkswagen- and Audi-badged vehicles earned six Top Safety Pick+ awards. VW models include the 2016 Jetta and Passat.
