GM recalls Chevy Colorado, Malibu to fix airbag deficiency

March 10, 2016

General Motors is preparing to recall a relatively small batch of Chevrolet Malibu sedans and Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups.

The company has discovered a problem with the front driver-side airbags, though it is said to be unrelated to widespread Takata recall campaigns, according to Reuters.

“Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the second stage of the driver frontal airbag may not deploy properly in certain high-speed crashes,” the automaker wrote in a stop-sale notification distributed to dealers. “If the vehicle is involved in a high-speed crash that triggers the second stage deployment of the driver frontal air bag, the second stage of the inflator may not fill the air bag as completely and as quickly as designed, which could lead to an increased risk of injury to the driver.”

The inflator supplier has not yet been publicly named. It is unclear if the same components are used in other vehicles sold by other automakers.

The issue has not yet been associated with any accidents or injuries.
