Porsche has promised to deliver a production EV that closely follows the Mission E concept.
Unveiled last year in Frankfurt, the Mission E was presented as a sleek four-door sports car with bold styling. The company already confirmed plans to bring an EV to market, however it was unclear if the concept’s radical looks and performance expectations would be retained.
“The external design will be very similar,” Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told Top Gear. “We have to fulfill certain conditions and change some things.”
The changes apparently do not include any compromises to the original 311-mile range target and plans for a 15-minute quick charge, though the latter feature will require additional infrastructure buildout to be of practical use for owners. Blume suggests the company is in talks with governments and manufacturers to establish standards for an 800-volt 150kW charging system.
The executive further promised that the brand’s first EV must “fulfill what a customer expects from a Porsche,” benchmarked against the 918 Spyder operated in EV mode.
Engineers are said to have begun building a new platform from the ground up, reportedly referring to the chassis by the code-name J1 as it moves forward. The project is expected to cost more than $1.1 billion before the car arrives in showrooms by the end of the decade.
