General Motors has partnered with Echomaster to develop a trailer camera system for the 2014-2016 Silverado lineup, including the 1500-series and Heavy Duty variants.
The package combines two side cameras integrated into the existing mirror housings, providing a better view of the sides of the truck and trailer. When the driver activates the turn signal, the center screen automatically switches to the corresponding camera view.
A third camera is designed to be mounted to the top rear edge of the trailer, enabling drivers to see behind the trailer when reversing. The satellite camera draws power from the trailer lights, while the video feed is sent wirelessly. The module also provides infrared illumination for maneuvering in low-light settings.
The system is also configured for an optional fourth camera, which can be placed inside the trailer to monitor horses or livestock. GM is also working on a camera integrated into the center brake light, assisting drivers when connecting a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer.
The system will be available from Chevy dealers starting next month, with prices starting at $999 (excluding labor and installation).
