NY: 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Convertible

March 24, 2016

General Motors has introduced the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 convertible on the second day of the New York auto show, following the ZL1 coupe‘s debut on day one.

Both variants share the same 6.2-liter supercharged small-block LT4 V8, delivering an estimated 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. The powerful engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or an available paddle-shifted 10-speed automatic.

The package features unique styling elements including a large lower grille opening, a unique ‘flow-tie’ logo on the upper grille, a new hood with a carbon-fiber insert, a larger front splitter and a wing-style rear spoiler, among other changes.

Complementing the extra power, the ZL1 features Eagle F1 tires on special 20-inch wheels. Brembo brakes help quickly shave off speed, with six-piston calipers grabbing 15.35-inch two-piece rotors up front.

GM claims the convertible ZL1 offers ‘comparable’ performance to the coupe. The new Camaro’s modular architecture offers improved rigidity, designed from the start with a high-performance topless variant in mind.

“As a result, only a few minor structural differences separate the coupe and convertible models, enabling the coupe’s track-honed chassis and driver control systems to carry over unchanged,” the company said in a statement.

The new ZL1 convertible will arrive in showrooms early next year.
