Maserati Ghibli earns Top Safety Pick [Video]

Maserati’s all-new Ghibli has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Ghibli made its world debut earlier this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show and was introduced to the United States market at the Los Angeles auto show.

The Maserati Ghibli earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award by nabbing top scores of ‘good’ in the institute’s side impact, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush and rear impact crash tests. The Ghibli was not put through the IIHS’ new small overlap crash test, so it was not eligible for the institute’s top overall rating of Top Safety Pick+.

“The all-new 2014 Maserati Ghibli represents a break from the ordinary in the mid-size sedan segment,” said Peter Grady, Maserati North America, Inc.’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Luxury sport sedan drivers can now enjoy the style and performance expected of a Maserati, and the assurance of its status as a 2013 IIHS Top Safety Safety Pick.”

The Ghibli’s high scores were no doubt the result of its seven standard airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver. The Ghibli has already been given five stars on the Euro NCAP crash test regime.

Currently shipping to dealers, the Maserati Ghibli features a twin-turbocharged V6 built by Ferrari, an eight-speed transmission and a start price of $65,000.
