Ford issues two new recalls for 2013 Escape over fire concerns

November 27, 2013

Ford has issued two new fire-related recalls for its 2013 Escape crossover. The recall count for the 2013 Escape now stands at seven, five of which were issued for defects that could cause to a vehicle fire.

In the first of the two recalls, Ford is recalling 140,000 Escape models sold in the United States and equipped with the automaker’s 1.6L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. Another 21,333 Escapes are being recalled in other global markets.

According to Ford, those Escape models covered by the recall suffer from a defective cylinder head that can crack when overheated. If the cylinder head cracks, it can leak engine oil, potentially causing a vehicle fire.

So far 13 vehicles fires have been linked to the recall.

In a separate recall, Ford is recalling 9,469 2013 Escapes in the U.S. for fuel lines that could leak. No fires have been linked to that recall.

The 2013 Escape has now been recalled a staggering seven times, with five of those recalls including the threat of a vehicle fire. Ford has received reports of 30 Escapes going up in flames, but thankfully no injuries.

Despite the serious nature of the recalls, the general public doesn’t seem to be overly worried about the Escape’s safety. Year to date Escape sales are up 13.9 percent to more than 250,000 units.
