Ferrari’s next-generation California roadster is beginning to come into focus. The folding hardtop and aluminum body configuration of the current model will be retained, but big changes will take place under the hood.
The new California will be the first Ferrari to implement the Italian automaker’s planned lineup-wide switchover to turbocharged engines, gaining a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 in place of the existing naturally-aspirated 4.3-liter V8.
The new blown eight is a relative of the unit used in the Maserati Quattroporte, itself a Maserati design that is built by Ferrari, though the mill will be outfitted with Ferrari-specific components throughout for use in the California, according to a Motor Trend report.
It’s too early for output details, but in the Quattroporte, the 3.8-liter produces 523 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The old 4.3-liter churns out 483 ponies and 372 lb-ft of twist.
Relatively little is known about the drop-top’s styling direction, but we’re hoping Marenello will be able to package the folding roof in a way that allows for a lower, more graceful rear deck.
Inside, the sorely-outdated, Chrysler-based navigation unit that mars the current cabin will be tossed into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. It will likely be replaced by Chrysler’s much-improved new-gen UConnect Access infotainment system.
The redesigned 2015 Ferrari California is expected to debut this year spring, with the Geneva Motor Show being a likely debut venue.
