General Motors has officially begun shipping its Cadillac ELR Extended Range Electric Vehicle from the company’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant.
Unveiled in production form earlier this year at the Detroit auto show, the Cadillac ELR is now on its way to dealer showrooms across the United States. Set to go on sale in January, the ELR will carry a price tag of $75,995.
The ELR shares its basic plug-in hybrid system with the lesser Chevrolet Volt, but Cadillac has tweaked the system to produce a more luxury-appropriate 207 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The ELR can travel up to 35 miles on battery power alone, with the onboard gas engine providing an overall range of about 300 miles.
The ELR also marks the first Cadillac to roll out of the Detroit-Hamtramck factory since the DTS ended production there in 2011. Detroit-Hamtramck opened in 1985 as a Cadillac factory, building the Eldorado.
