Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu is teasing its upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon offerings with renderings of a trio of Kopen roadsters.
Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Kopen is a roadster concept designed to fit within Japan’s strict kei car specification. Two versions were shown, the sporty Rmz and more rugged, Outback-ified Xmz. Both are front-wheel-drive and powered by Daihatsu’s new KF-series 660cc three-cylinder.
Based off the Kopen Rmz, the chrome red Kopen Future Included Rm1 most closely augurs a possible production version. Shown for the first time with the convertible roof raised, it appears to be a folding hardtop variety much like the original Copen.
The Kopen Future Included Rm2 is a sport modified version representing the more outlandish side of Japan’s SEMA equivalent. Finished in matte black and orange, it features matching orange alloys and a large, carbon fiber rear spoiler.
The Kopen Future Included Xm1 is based off the Xmz concept, finished in camouflage and gray cladding. Like the motor show concept, body panels are interchangeable, easily removed should a different color or patter be desired.
If it sees production, the Kopen will succeed much-beloved folding-hardtop Copen roadster, which ceased production in 2012 after a 10 year run, but export to the US is most likely not in the cards.
